Ponta Delgada, 17 July 2020
The Vice-Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Center for Handicrafts (CRAA), opens today the Azorean Handicraft Award ‘CoMtradição’ exhibition at the Whaling Industry Museum, in São Roque do Pico.
The ‘CoMtradição’ Award emerges as a way to distinguish and promote the activities of entities or artisans who are known by their dedication to the work in the area of handicrafts, thus raising the expressions of regional culture.
In this sense, it aims to consecrate artisans or entities with a consolidated and historically relevant career, whose work has contributed and continues to contribute to affirm the identity of the Azores arts and crafts.
This award, in its second edition, recognizes and honors João Pereira, who not only contributed over several decades to the dynamism of Terceira’s economy, employing dozens of embroiderers, but also preserved the tradition of white embroidery on this island.
This award includes an anthological exhibition with itinerancy on the islands of Terceira, Pico and São Miguel and a set of educational activities, with the presence of artisans, enhancing the intergenerational encounter and fostering a taste for handicrafts.
The exhibition will be open until August 30, and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 5.30 pm.
