The Azores PO 2020 is a program supported by the Community Structural Funds FEDER and FSE, for the 2014-2020 program period, with implementation in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
The Program was prepared by the Regional Government of the Azores, summarizing a very broad range of consultations and contributions from a wide range of regional agents, expressing the main proposals on regional development policy for the near future, in accordance with the main guidelines of the European Strategy 2020 and the National Partnership Agreement.
The strategic vision associated with this Operational Program is based on the ambition of the Azores to establish themselves as a relevant European region, based on four main strategic guidelines:
– An open and innovative Region in the use of endogenous, tangible and intangible resources, with an economic level of production that will enable it to reach a higher level in the regional European context, where the economy is based on a dynamic, integrated and diversified, overcoming the constraints of the limited domestic market;
– A relevant territory in the flow of goods and people, in the context of the logistics and maritime transport system between Europe and the American continent, complemented by a full use of data transmission networks and infrastructures, minimizing the outermost condition and the dispersion of the Regional territory;
– an inclusive and balanced society, generating opportunities for participation, lifelong learning, access to employment and full realization of children and young people, the elderly and families;
– A distinctive landscape, environment and livelihood, supported by qualified urban spaces, in an internationally recognized and differentiated natural and cultural heritage, with effective responses in the biodiversity and ecosystem protection and adaptation to climate change.
By concentrating the Azores PO 2020 on almost all the interventions co-financed by the Structural Funds in the archipelago, the range of thematic objectives and the selected investment priorities is broad and diversified, taking into account the different strands of public policies oriented towards intelligent economic growth, employment, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, allowing local agents access to financial resources that will enable their development projects in different areas of intervention and sectors of the economy and society.
Finally, it is worth highlighting the specific support from the Structural Fund FEDER which the Region will benefit from, thanks to its status as an Outermost Region, as recognized in Article nº 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which will be used to fund obligations of the public transportation service of passengers between the islands of the Azores.
