On September 9, for the first time in the post-pandemic period, the Technical Monitoring Committee for the collective trademark “Artesanato dos Açores” met in Ponta Delgada. Composed of independent members representing various local entities, this commission is responsible for analyzing and evaluating the craft products that are proposed for certification by artisans. The Committee is also in charge of granting the right to use the “Artesanato dos Açores” collective trademark.
Applications for certification were submitted from Corvo, Pico, Faial, Terceira, São Jorge, and São Miguel, in the following handicraft areas or for the following products: fish scales, ceramics, patchwork, weaving, Corvo wool beret, and Corvo wooden locks.
The Azores Crafts and Design Center has now 115 Craft Production Units (UPA’s) with the “Artesanato dos Açores” certification seal.
In addition to the technical process inherent to brand registration, the certification of handcrafted products in the Azores is based on the trust and accountability of producers as the main stakeholders in the market distinction of their products.

The Azores in a Box Store, a reference space for the promotion and marketing of regional crafts certified with the collective label “Artesanato dos Açores” (handicrafts from the Azores) and innovative handicraft products, begins this month a cycle of bimonthly exhibitions. With these events, the Azores Crafts and Design Center aims to make the public aware of non-traditional craft areas and publicize the work of the artisans who develop them.
Jeremias Tavares is the first craftsman invited to exhibit in this space. He dedicates himself to glass fusing, a craft technique based on melting small pieces of glass by exposing them to high temperatures. Jeremias develops decorative and utilitarian pieces, with special emphasis on his creations with marine motifs and lamps of various shapes and types. His nativity scenes are unique. They combine glass with wrought iron, chrome or wood, pebble stone, or burnt stone. Jewelry is also part of their product line, combining glass with silver, which makes it more exquisite.
The Azores in a Box store exhibits products from more than 100 handcrafted production units, representing all the islands of the archipelago. Located in Ponta Delgada, in the Portas do Mar Commercial Galleries, Shop 15, the store can be visited from Monday to Friday between 10 am and 6 pm.
In the scope of the project “Trilhar Caminhos”, developed by Cáritas Diocesana dos Açores and oriented to the training and socio-occupational reinsertion of incarcerated people, the Azores Crafts and Design Center will promote a workshop on initiation to wicker basketry, oriented by the artisan Aida Bairos. The training will be directed to the female wing of the Angra do Heroísmo Prison and will take place from September 27 to October 1.
On September 18, Azores Crafts and Design Center joins the celebration of the 15th anniversary of Graciosa island’s entrance to UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, promoting a Children’s Creative Sewing Workshop led by artisan Sandra Cunha.
