Antique Embroidery of the Azores – Catalog

To increase the value of the Embroidery of the Azores, is essential to know its historical roots, beyond the technical aspects involved in their implementation and regulated by the brand’s certification “Artesanato dos Açores”. This was the purpose that motivated the Competition/Exhibition of Antique Embroidery of the Azores, an initiative of the Regional Secretariat of Economy, through the Regional Centre for Handicrafts.

The 395 pieces or sets of pieces from private collections and various public institutions, are excellent examples of the antique embroidery of the Azores, mainly from the 19th century and the 1st half of the next century, having been enjoyed at the “Palácio de Santana” on the island of S. Miguel, at the “Palácio dos Capitães Generais” on the island of Terceira, at the Society “Amor da Pátria” in Faial, and still in the “Museu Nacional do Traje” in Lisbon.
