At the age
of 29 he decided to dedicate himself to what he really likes – the manufacture
of string instruments.
He affirms
that the taste for guitars and violas comes from hearing his father play so
much.
When he had
to make his academic decisions, he opted for the Professional School of
Capelas, where he received training as a carpenter. Then he did an internship,
on the mainland Portugal, with the master guitarist Gilberto Grácio.
With the
workshop he has at Rua do Peru, receiving visits from locals and foreigners, he
feels more the recognition of being the only one to make violas from scratch in
São Miguel. In addition to violas da terra, it has also responded to new market
demands by making ukuleles and mandolins. He is also a restorer of old
instruments.
In spite of
all the mastery in the construction of these instruments, he admits that
playing is not his forte, he just limits himself to tuning.
