Biography:

Maria de Jesus Matos learned how to make lace with her mother, Balbina da Costa Machado, and her grandmother, Olímpia Jacinta da Costa, lace makers whose specialty was the making of “Rosas de Margaridas”. At the age of six, she started by learning “o cordão” and at the age of nine she was already doing “as irlandas” for the jobs ordered to her mother. At the age of twelve, after finishing her schooling, she started to do her first lace jobs abroad. Today, Maria de Jesus Matos is a recognized lace maker and her works are certified by the collective brand Artesanato dos Açores.
