Following the initiative announced in May’s newsletter, we are sharing additional information about the research on Azorean basketry developed by Zahra Tyebjee between September 2025 and May 2026, within the framework of the Fulbright scholarship program. The project was hosted by CADA, along with RARA – Azores Region Handicraft Residency, a project of the cultural association Anda & Fala. As mentioned then, its results were presented on May 28th at Vaga – a space for art and knowledge.

In addition to exploring some basketry techniques and plant fibers used in the Azores, through the know-how shared by some of our artisans, the researcher focused especially on the potential of “conteira” fiber. Thus, the presentation of the research results was accompanied by the workshop "From plant to basket", which included a sample of basketry experiments made with “conteira” fiber, where participants had the opportunity to learn how to extract this fiber and braid it. CADA also participated in this activity, closely following the experimentation process with this fiber. Since the “conteira” (Hedychium gardnerianum) is an invasive species present in great abundance in the region, its use for artisanal purposes has been little explored, and could eventually be addressed within the framework of current control and management strategies. Zahra Tyebjee's research thus laid relevant groundwork for future explorations, opening new perspectives on the integration of local raw materials into contemporary practices.
