Coffee production and marketing are now artisanal activities

12 June 2025

Many texts and studies indicate that coffee arrived in the Azores around the 15th century. It would have come from gardens and nurseries in Holland or France. At that time it was used for domestic consumption and the plant looked good in the private botanical garden, due to the beauty of the bush, but mainly because of its beautiful flower that covers the canopy.

Nowadays it is a bet and an alternative to other agricultural activities. The predominant variety is Arabica, the coffee found perfect conditions for its growth and fruit production - the humidity and temperature of the Archipelago.

On some islands, we already have small producers, as is the case on the island of São Jorge, and an Association of Azorean Coffee Producers – APAC has already been created, which is based on the island of Terceira.

Taking all this information into consideration and the predominance of artisanal processes in the treatment of this production, a proposal was made by CADA, so that the activity of “Coffee Preparation and Conservation” would become an artisanal activity, in which producers could register. It is with great satisfaction that we announce that it has been accepted and is included in the National Repertoire of Craft Activities.
