PAULA CRISTINA BRASIL AZEVEDO

Island:

São Jorge - Calheta

Biography:

The art of weaving began in the family with her grandmother, Maria Alexandrina Pereira, in the 60's, having served as a support to feed “many mouths”. From an early age, the artisan remembers the conviviality around the wool and its utensils (cards, reel, loom,…). She also remembers her grandmother dyeing wool of various colors that made beautiful wool bedspreads in “ponto alto”, typical of Fajã dos Vimes. This beautiful art has always aroused her desire to follow and revive this craft. Now she makes quilts, pillows, rugs and pot holders on the loom. In knitting and crochet she produces socks, scarves, berets, all with a single raw material, wool.
