Azores in a Box - Exhibition METALS

06 March 2025

Although the reference to the local production of metal artifacts is late, a fact that can be attributed to the non-existence of these raw materials in the Archipelago, the origins of wrought iron date back to ancient times, when civilizations discovered the art of manipulating iron. Originally, iron was shaped by hand, heated in primitive furnaces and hammered to create simple shapes. However, it was during the Middle Ages and Renaissance that wrought iron began to flourish as a distinctly elaborate art form.
Today, iron and other metals continue to form the basis of metalworking and the design of metal objects and equipment, standing as a lasting testament to human skill and creativity, adapted to modern trends and needs.
When visiting Azores in a Box, at Portas do Mar, you will be able to find a variety of metal objects, made using different techniques, from creation from scratch to the reuse and repurposing of old materials and waste, in the exhibition that will be accessible to the public from March 10th this year until the end of April.
