Viola da Terra

The '12-string guitar', arriving in the Azores in the 15th century, assumed common characteristics in all the islands, maintaining its primitive features, but was acquiring different tunings and particularities.

Thus, it becomes the most typical musical instrument of the archipelago of the Azores , playing over time an important role in the festive singing, dances, singing battles, challenges, and, therefore, acquires great social and cultural importance in the life of the Azoreans.
