Hats
Produced using basketry techniques, it presents itself as an artifact full of symbolism, evidencing its own activity, identifying its origin, which for a long time was confined to the island of Pico and widespread across the other islands, in the middle of the last century, when it began to be exported to America.
One of the activities that characterized the parish of Santo Amaro, on the island of Pico, was the making of wheat straw hats, using the sewn spiral technique. It's part of Santo Amaro's memories to see women sitting at the door braiding their hair. They themselves learned from their mothers and aunts, as children, from collecting straw, to finishing the hat. There are about a hundred different braids to make straw hats. Before making the hat, the straw has to be unraveled by the knot, separated, sorted, brushed and split. The hats with round and short brims are topped by a high, oval crown, and are made of straw, profusely cooked.
