ZSOMBOR KERESZTES

Island:

São Miguel - Ponta Delgada

Biography:

Born in Transylvania and he lives in São Miguel for about 6 years. He is a graphic designer by training, but it was in his childhood on his walks with his parents in the Transylvanian mountains that he gained a taste for working and getting to know wood.

He draws and makes kitchen utensils from floating wood that gives to the coast or woods from invasive species from the Azorean islands. He uses only hand tools and respects the natural shape and grain of the wood, which makes each of his pieces unique. His goal is to create practical and comfortable but aesthetically interesting utensils. The provenance of the wood is important because using hardwood from the sea and invasive wood from the Azores, the production of his pieces is sustainable and helps to reduce waste.

Zsombor Keresztes' pieces are created for an audience that values the manual work involved in creating objects, admires their well-designed shapes and appreciates their utilitarian component.

Zsombor Keresztes integrates, since October 2019, the Azores Craft Lab - Handicrafts of the Azores Incubator, with its project S87WOOD.
