JOÃO ANTÓNIO ARAÚJO ANDRADE

Island:

São Miguel - Lagoa

Biography:

He began to enjoy the life of a basketmaker at an early age, by living with his grandfather who every year made baskets for agricultural work, used on the harvest of potatoes and beets. In 1963 he began to work in the basketry industry in Água de Pau, learning with the master João Constantino until 1967, when he emigrated, passing into the hands of Manuel de Arruda, who died in 1971. Guardian of knowledge, the work of João Andrade perpetuates the rural living experiences of the islands in all its space-time dynamics, with pieces such as the grape harvest basket, the fisherman's basket, the laundry basket, the fruit basket, the snack basket, among others.
