Biography:

Maria Johanna Vermazeren uses the red or white clay in her ceramic pieces, molding only by hand or using the potter's wheel. She often uses ancestral combustion techniques such as raku, a slow exposure to fire interspersed with glaze or soenga, thus obtaining pieces with a unique coloration. She applies the traditional lace from Pico and Faial in her work, in a different approach to a secular tradition.
