Biography:

Maria Manuela da Silva Medeiros, from the parish of Conceição, Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island. Her art is furniture wrapping with straw, an artisanal knowledge that has passed from hand to hand in her family for generations. It is an art that requires a lot of manual sensitivity and requires great concentration. The fragility of the straw, a vegetable fiber treated and dried for this purpose, requires it. The tools that she uses are: a drill with a wood handle, a metal barb, a wood or whale bone needle, a metal straw cutter, a wood lathes and a hammer for finishing. These tools worked in the hands of her grandparents, then of her parents and now in her own. In the words of Manuela, "they carry with them history, they have soul, they work alone".
