It took place in Vila do Porto, at Igreja das Vitórias, from June 22nd to July 4th - a two-week Vegetable Fiber Workshop. This initiative was a partnership between CADA and VAGA through their Creative Residencies project – RARA and with the support of the Vila do Porto City Hall.
Led by artisan Aida Bairos in the 1st week and by designers Miguel Flor and Henrique Ralheta who joined in the 2nd week, this Workshop had the participation of 5 trainees. In the first week they learned the basic techniques of basket making in wicker, reeds and also explored other fibers available on the island such as rye, wheat, rush or conteira. The 2nd week was focused on the creative method, possibilities and uses of the various fibers.
This workshop, similar to the one held on the island of São Miguel last year, with its extensive duration, is part of a broader training strategy that CADA intends to develop with the opening of the Azores Craft Lab, which will be located at the Azores Qualification Center - Capelas. This approach complements the short-term workshops, with the main objective of attracting more people to crafts, combining the appreciation of traditional practices with the promotion of professionalization in the sector.
