About the artisan – Manuela Linhares defines herself as a “Maker of beautiful things!”. She is a teacher by profession and, for this reason, has a complicated schedule to manage. Whenever she can, she dedicates herself to experimenting with new techniques and new materials and having crossed paths throughout her life with very skilled and generous people in sharing knowledge, she has always been perfecting and acquiring new techniques. By choice and with a view to consolidating her knowledge, she entered the Academy of Arts in Ponta Delgada, which allowed her to learn the secrets of making traditional paper and fabric flowers and creating Registos of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres.
EXHIBITION - During the months of May and June 2026, the Azores in a Box store, at Portas do Mar, will host an exhibition with works by the artisan Manuela Linhares. The Azores in a Box space will be open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 for those who wish to visit the exhibition of the artisan's various works and see the pieces and techniques she uses.
The techniques she masters, such as crochet and felt (among others), will be represented in the exhibition. Throughout her work, the presence of vegetal motifs predominates, namely flowers and, more recently, silkworm cocoons, from which she makes earrings (and other accessories) and flowers that she uses to "dress" the Registos of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres.
It should be noted that Manuela Linhares was one of the artisans, registered with the Azores Crafts and Design Center (CADA), who received the GI Certificate for her work on Registos do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres adorned with silkworm cocoon flowers. Her Registos show a fresher and more contemporary approach, but without distorting the traditional and the value it represents as a devotional piece.
