Biography:

Filomena Cardoso's main activity is lace making, which, due to its quality and recognized artistic value, is registered under the collective brand "Artesanato dos Açores". She started making lace when she was 9 years old, and at 19 she began working for the lace-makers of that time and dedicating herself almost exclusively to this artisanal activity. She obtained her artisan card in 1990. Since then, she has participated in regional, national, and international fairs, gaining knowledge that has contributed to the evolution of her work in terms of quality and diversity, and attracting new clients. Her atelier, where she creates and exhibits her pieces, is in Madalena, Pico Island. In 2008, the Women's World Summit Foundation awarded the "Women's Creativity in Rural Life" prize to the Group of Women Lace Makers in Pico.
