Crafts from the Azores at the largest craftsmanship fair in the Iberian Peninsula

Handicrafts from the Azores are being promoted at the International Crafts Fair – FIA Lisboa, the largest crafts event in the Iberian Peninsula, which opened its doors on Saturday at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), in Parque das Nações, in Lisbon.


Lúcia Linhares, Vanda Melo, Isabel Silva Melo, Cláudia Furtado, Adolfo Mendonça, Sofia Afonso and Adelaide Costa are the “ambassadors” of the Handicrafts of the Azores until Sunday, July 6, in an international event that attracts thousands of visitors every year.


Isabel Silva Melo and Adolfo Mendonça, in the ceramics area who have been already awarded in previous editions of this event, compete for the FIA ​​2025 Award in the Traditional and Contemporary Crafts categories. Adelaide Costa in the area of ​​vegetable fibers, and Cláudia Furtado with engraving on whale bone and wood, are competing for the first time.


The participation of these artisanal companies that work with ceramics, fish scales, corn leaves, wood, bone and textiles is supported by the Incentive System for the Development of Handicrafts (SIDART), through which expenses for specialized and promotional fairs, among other investments, are shared annually.


The Artesanato dos Açores stand is located in the pavilion dedicated to national crafts, alongside the main entities that develop their activity in the craft sector, such as the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), CEARTE and Municipalities from all over the country that promote their craft productions from a cultural and tourist point of view.


The Azorean stand, which has the usual display of food products certified by “Marca Açores”, stands out for its volume, the endogenous materials used on the stands and the festive atmosphere that welcomes and promotes the richness of the Region’s cultural heritage.


In this context, an exhibition of nine Registos of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is on display at the Artesanato dos Açores stand at FIA-Lisboa, which are distinguished by the exuberance of the floral compositions and the materials used, such as fish scales, corn leaves, silkworm cocoons, beads and a wide variety of paper and fabrics.


FIA-Lisbon can be visited from 3pm to 11pm.
