It consists of preparing and sculpting, using suitable auxiliary tools, rigid materials of animal origin (bone, horn, sperm whale teeth, etc.), to produce pieces of an essentially decorative nature (figurines, miniatures, etc.).

It includes the so-called “scrimshaw” and also the production of “pastoral art” when the raw material is bone or horn.
