In July, the Government of the Azores, through Centro de Artesanato e Design dos Açores (CADA), will continue to promote the Expo Açores Artesanato exhibitions, a circuit associated with the main summer festivities in the Region, which constitutes a fundamental platform for the promotion and commercialization of products from artisanal production units in the Azores.

From the 6th to the 10th of July, São Jorge receives for the first time the Expo Açores Artesanato – Semana Cultural das Velas. In this first edition, nine local artisanal production units and one from the island of Pico will be present. From the very rich certified weaving of São Jorge to the famous and also certified Espécies, through varied sweets, lace items, macrame, embroidery, jewelry, stone sculpture and scrimshaw from Pico, this is a show not to be missed.

Except for the opening day, July 6, which is announced for 8:45 pm, this event can be visited every day, between 7:30 pm and 11:00 pm, in the tent on Avenida da Conceição.

Expo Açores Artesanato – Festas da Praia will take place from July 29 to August 7. Work from twenty-five artisanal production units from Terceira and one from Faial will be on display, in a exhibition of products from artisanal areas as varied as embroidery, certified with the brand Artesanato dos Açores, lace items, home textiles, weaving, clothing accessories, leather goods, synthetic materials, wooden miniatures, jewelry, wood inlays, toys, rag dolls, clothing and ceramics.

The event will be installed in a tent at the Marina of Praia da Vitória and can be visited at the following times:

July 29 from 1:00 pm to 12:00 am

Business days from 19:00 to 00:00

Saturdays and Sundays from 17:00 to 00:00

Isabel Silva Melo distinguished with Honorable Mention at FIA 2022

The artisan from São Miguel, Isabel Silva Melo, saw her piece “A Lagoa de Arquimedes” receive an Honorable Mention in the “Best Contemporary Artisanal Piece Award” at the Lisbon International Handicraft Fair (FIA Lisboa), in which she participated.

Isabel Silva Melo, won the 2020 National Handicraft Award in the Entrepreneurship and New Talents category, with her figurative ceramics, inspired by the customs, culture and traditions of the Azores and political and social issues. The artisan is also distinguished by her work of costume jewelry with fish scales. Graduated in Fine Arts by Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto, Isabel Silva Melo has her pieces certified with the brand “Artesanato dos Açores”.

FIA Lisboa Handicraft Competitions, which took place from June 25th to July 3rd at Parque das Nações, have the mission of valuing and stimulating Portuguese artisanal production.
