The Regional Government promotes the 1st Handicrafts Festival for Children of the Azores – Raízes

 

The Vice-Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Center for Handicrafts (CRAA) promotes, from May 3 to 5, at the facilities of the Regional Center for Handicrafts, in Ponta Delgada, the 1st Handicrafts Festival for Children of the Azores – Raízes.

This pioneering initiative, which was born from the Azorean Handicrafts Pedagogical Project – Raízes, aims to sensitize the younger audience to the importance of know-how, with CRAA intending to make known both traditional techniques and raw materials as well as creative and innovative experimentation of new ways of doing it, so that young people also promote the traditions and cultural heritage of their community.

In this first edition, the program of the festival, besides the commercial part, includes workshops, commented music shows and puppet theater, with performances by Rafael Carvalho and the groups Teatro Historioscopio, Teatro Marionetas and Associação Alma d’Arame.

The festival will also have an outdoor area where the younger ones will have at their disposal toys, traditional games and healthy snacks.

On the first day of the event, May 3, initiatives are planned for the schools, including demonstrations of handicrafts, a commented musical show of viola da terra and a puppet theater.

Integrated in this festival, will be featured in the ‘Especial Azores in a Box’ a exhibition and sale of traditional and contemporary toys from various islands of the Archipelago, which can be visited from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on May 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the following day, and from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on May 5.

In the context of the Raízes – Pedagogical Project for the Handicraft of the Azores, there will be workshops on bread, ceramic modeling, wood toys, basketwork, corn leaf dolls and cloth dolls, and the interested parties should register by calling 296 309 100 or by email at craa@azores.gov.pt.

The 1st Handicrafts Festival for Children of the Azores – Raízes has free admission and will be open to the public on May 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on May 4 and 5, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
