Regional Center for Handicraft Support brings exhibition “Creative Residency 2019 – Ceramics and Vegetable Fibers” to Cape Verde

The Vice Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Center for Handicraft Support (CRAA), opens Tuesday, September 3, the exhibition “Creative Residency 2019 – Ceramics and Vegetable Fibers”, at CNAD – Center for Art, Crafts and Design of Mindelo on São Vicente island in Cape Verde.

The exhibition, which will be open until September 30, includes the works resulting from the Creative Residency held this year in São Miguel, as part of the transregional Craft & Art project, involving the participation of seven artisans and two mentors.

The Creative Residency project aims to develop experiences that reinforce interculturality and the creation of new products based on natural resources, combining innovation and tradition, focusing on the exchange of knowledge and techniques, in this particular case between Azorean and Cape Verdean artisans.

This was a residence where endogenous resources such as wicker, dragon tree leaf, swordfish, straw and Santa Maria clay were explored in order to enhance the value of local raw materials and their use in handicrafts.

The artisans who were part of this Residence were Aida Bairos, Cristina Bairos and Marina Mendonça, from Santa Maria, Bento Silva, from São Miguel, Aurélia Rocha and Manuela Medeiros, from Terceira, and Luis Lopes, from Santo Antão Island, in Cape Verde. .

Guided by Kathi Stertzig and Álbio Nascimento, through The Home Project Design Studio, came together pieces of enormous economic potential, produced with materials and techniques typical of the Region, using a renewed aesthetic.
