Regional Center for Handicrafts launches, in Ponta Delgada, products from the Creative Residence of Embroidery in Matiz

Ponta Delgada, February 6, 2020

The Vice-Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Center for Handicrafts (CRAA), will launch on Friday, February 7, at 5:30 pm, the products of the Creative Residence of Embroidery in Matiz at the ‘Azores in a Box’, in Ponta Delgada.

This Residence, dedicated to the innovation and market repositioning of São Miguel’s Embroidery in Matiz, aims to enhance this artisanal production whose quality and origin have been certified since 1998 – it was the first artisanal product to be certified – and which is an integral part of a cultural heritage to preserve.

Traditional from the island of São Miguel, Matiz Embroidery dates back to the 30’s of the 20th century and is characterized by asymmetric floral motifs that, in a way, recreate the ornamentation of oriental faience, using only two shades of blue.

This is the 8th edition of the Creative Residences project, through which CRAA intends to encourage the creation of new products, with a differentiating component, generating sustainability for the work of artisans and the possibility of reaching new markets.

It also contributes to the promotion of techniques, materials and products developed by designers and artisans, in a creative dynamic between traditional knowledge and design.

Product designer Daniela Duarte worked together with the artisans of Cooperativa de Artesanato Senhora da Paz, Maria da Paixão Resendes and Margarida Alves, developing new ideas, innovating and creating pieces that will be available for sale starting on Friday.

The products and process ehxibition will be on display at the ‘Azores in a Box’ until March 31, and can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Saturdays, from 9:30 am to 1 pm.
