Azorean artisan wins National Handicraft Award

The artisan from São Miguel, Isabel Silva Melo won the National Handicraft Award, in the Entrepreneurship New Talents category.

The artisan, certified with the seal of the collective brand “Artesanato dos Açores” in the areas of Fish Scales, Lapinha Nativity Scenes and Figurative Ceramics, by the Regional Center for Handicrafts (CRAA), now sees her work as a ceramist be recognized with the award of the New Talent Entrepreneurship Award, of the National Handicraft Award.

Isabel Silva Melo is dedicated to the creation of unique pieces, addressing themes related to the representation of customs, culture and religious traditions of the islands of the Azores, as well as themes related to literature, poetry and political and social issues.

She has a degree in Plastic Arts from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Porto and rediscovered her taste for ceramics three years ago.

The National Handicraft Award, which takes place biannually, aims to encourage artisanal production, in the traditional and contemporary aspects, distinguishing Portuguese artisans, focusing on both their technical and professional skills and their aesthetic ability.

This initiative, which is part of the Arts and Crafts Promotion Program, consists of enhancing the excellence of courses and activities in the field of arts and crafts, through institutional recognition and the granting of a financial incentive to the development of the activity.
