Antique Weaving Of the Azores – Catalog

Following the certification process of weaving in the Azores, in June 2001, the then Regional Economic Affairs Secretariat, through the Regional Centre for Handicrafts and under the patronage of the Presidency of the Regional Government made this year a dedicated period especially for weaving, not only giving it the quality status it deserves, through certification and training, but providing a space for scrutiny and putting in perspective the techniques, including the design, through the realization of an exhibition that was displayed in the cities of Angra do Heroísmo in the Palácio dos Capitães Generais, and in Ponta Delgada, at the Academia das Artes.

The exhibit of Antique Weaving of the Azores included about 40 examples from private collections of various islands of the Azores, registered in this catalog with detailed images that capture in a special way the color and texture of traditional Azorean weaving. They are mostly blankets and bedspreads that, during the popular festivities, are displayed in the windows and balconies of their owners, filling the streets of color that our folklore knows well.
