The project “Residência Criativa” sponsored and organized by the Regional Centre for Handicrafts, is another promotion and innovation project of regional handicrafts, which encourages the creation of new products.
Residência Criativa 2016
The Regional Center for Handicrafts (CRAA) promoted from June 14th to August 12nd the Creative Residence Exhibition 2016, at the Whalers Museum, on the island of Pico. This initiative results from the 4th edition of the project Residências Criativas , which aims to create new products, with a significant and differentiating artisanal component, creating, through the integration of the products in a brand, sustainability for the work of the artisans and reach new markets.
In the 4th edition of the Creative Residence, the focus was on the traditional lace of the islands of Pico and Faial, through the clothing segment, inviting the fashion designer Silvia Teixeira to this effect. The mini-collection, Swing Lace, involves 12 coordinates of ready-to-wear, feminine and masculine, reflecting the inspiration of the designer in the glamor of the 30’s, adding in a subtle way tradition and innovation.
The artisans who welcomed the project and introduced new practices to their productions were Ana Baptista, from the island of Faial, Alzira Neves, Conceição Neves and Arménio Goulart, from the island of Pico.
Residência Criativa 2015
The of fashion and home collection , conceived under the Creative Residence 2015 was on display at the “Artesanato dos Açores” booth at the FIA – International Handicrafts Fair, held from June 25th to July 3rd in Lisbon.
With the goal of enhancing traditional white embroidery on linen, but also of creating a brand with visibility in the national and international market, the creative residence, promoted by CRAA, had the partnership of the Department of Textile Engineering of the University of Minho.
Residência Criativa 2014
CRAA is promoting, in partnership with the University of Minho, the 3rd edition of “Residência Criativa”, on the islands of Terceira and Graciosa, which addresses the theme of white embroidery, typical of those islands, in order to project the image of that handicraft activity. This edition aims to create a brand and give visibility, in national and international markets, with clothing and luxury home product lines, to an audience that appreciates not only excellence, but also culture and tradition. It was implemented a management team, to implement, manage and spread the brand in the market, increasing the visibility of the Azores Handicrafts and boosting the local economy.
Residência Criativa 2013
The “Residência Criativa” in 2013 had as general goals the creation of a collection of innovative handicrafts, linked to handmade weaving, focusing in the field of weaving of “repasso” and rag.
In a different format from the 1st edition, meeting the specific needs of the handicraft area and the target audience for this edition were invited two creative persons, Joana Dias and Teresa Gameiro, who created product lines related to fashion and home products, in partnership with the Cooperativa de Artesanato de Santa Maria.
Weaving in Santa Maria has a great tradition, however, the product is devalued and it was intended, through this edition of the Residency, revive the tradition with new values of contemporary aesthetic, capturing new market niches.
Residência Criativa in 2012
The big bet of CRAA in the innovation of traditional knowledge was made by the 1st Creative Residency in 2012, in which it has enhanced the craftsmanship of the island of Pico through the unique handicraft school of the Region, the Regional Handicraft School of Santo Amaro. This residency has focused mainly on the techniques of wheat straw and fish scales, with the ultimate goal of revitalizing techniques in extinction, but also innovate the existing ones, taking advantage of the expertise of local artisans, creating new product lines economically viable. Went to contest and were selected the 5 best handicraft projects to be develop together with the artisans for 2 months on the island of Pico.
