The project “Residência Criativa” sponsored and organized by the Regional Centre for Handicrafts, is another promotion and innovation project of regional handicrafts, which encourages the creation of new products.
Residência Criativa 2019
The project Creative Residence in Ceramics and Vegetable Fibers aims to develop experiences that reinforce interculturality and the creation of new products based on natural resources, combining innovation and tradition, betting on the exchange of knowledge and techniques between Azorean and Cape Verdean artisans.
This regional initiative, developed in partnership with GRATER, exploited endogenous resources such as Santa Maria’s wicker, dragon tree leaf, bulrush, straw and clay, because it is essential to re-value local raw materials and its use in crafts. It may be unusual to merge two areas as different as pottery and vegetable fiber, but CRAA wanted to challenge artisans and guest mentors to innovate.
There were seven artisans who were part of this Residence. Aida Bairos, Cristina Bairos and Marina Mendonça from the Island of Santa Maria, Bento Silva from the Island of São Miguel, Aurelia Rocha and Manuela Medeiros from the Island of Terceira and Luís Lopes from the Island of Santo Antão in Cape Verde. Thus, under the guidance of Kathi Stertzig and Álbio Nascimento through The Home Project Design Studio, jointly created pieces with enormous economic potential emerged using materials and techniques typical of the region using a renewed aesthetic.
Residência Criativa 2018
This residence in particular, aimed at the innovation and repositioning of S. Jorge in the weaving market, valuing an artisanal production of quality and certified origin, since the year 2001 and, as such, an integral part of a cultural heritage to be preserved.
CRAA invited the textile designer Paula Caria, with work recognized nationally and internationally, having developed several fashion collections with As Capuchinhas, a Handicraft Cooperative that is dedicated to the work in burel.
Paula Caria worked with the artisans of the Handicraft Cooperative of Senhora da Encarnação, betting on the creation, quality, diversification and differentiation of some of the most relevant Azorean weaving products.
It is through projects like this that the credibility of the arts and crafts is achieved, as a platform for affirmation of identity and culture, with measures that improve the skills of artisans and promote the development of regional handicrafts, underlining the importance they must assume in the development of the economy and tourism.
Residência Criativa 2017
This residence took place in 2017, in the island of Terceira, and involved the participation of 2 handicraft production units of the inlay and wooden arts, namely Susana Almeida and Francisco Pereira, product designer Susana António and the collaboration of the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Regional Directorate of Forests Resources.
The Creative Residences of the Regional Center for Handicrafts intend to keep alive the traditional arts and crafts, promoting the techniques and knowledge of incalculable cultural value through a new view.
At a time when there is so much talk about endogenous resources, it made perfect sense for this residence to be based on the tradition of the art of wood cutouts and inlays, already so little spread through the archipelago and that it’s urgent to recover.
Through the creation of small pieces and using wood such as the cryptomeria, acacia or beech, it is revealed the economic potential of objects produced with materials and techniques typical of the region with a renewed aesthetic appeal.
Residência Criativa 2016
The Regional Center for Handicrafts (CRAA) promoted from June 14th to August 12nd the Creative Residence Exhibition 2016, at the Whalers Museum, on the island of Pico. This initiative results from the 4th edition of the project Residências Criativas , which aims to create new products, with a significant and differentiating artisanal component, creating, through the integration of the products in a brand, sustainability for the work of the artisans and reach new markets.
In the 4th edition of the Creative Residence, the focus was on the traditional lace of the islands of Pico and Faial, through the clothing segment, inviting the fashion designer Silvia Teixeira to this effect. The mini-collection, Swing Lace, involves 12 coordinates of ready-to-wear, feminine and masculine, reflecting the inspiration of the designer in the glamor of the 30’s, adding in a subtle way tradition and innovation.
The artisans who welcomed the project and introduced new practices to their productions were Ana Baptista, from the island of Faial, Alzira Neves, Conceição Neves and Arménio Goulart, from the island of Pico.
Residência Criativa 2015
CRAA is promoting, in partnership with the University of Minho, the 3rd edition of “Residência Criativa”, on the islands of Terceira and Graciosa, which addresses the theme of white embroidery, typical of those islands, in order to project the image of that handicraft activity. This edition aims to create a brand and give visibility, in national and international markets, with clothing and luxury home product lines, to an audience that appreciates not only excellence, but also culture and tradition. It was implemented a management team, to implement, manage and spread the brand in the market, increasing the visibility of the Azores Handicrafts and boosting the local economy.
Residência Criativa 2013
The “Residência Criativa” in 2013 had as general goals the creation of a collection of innovative handicrafts, linked to handmade weaving, focusing in the field of weaving of “repasso” and rag.
In a different format from the 1st edition, meeting the specific needs of the handicraft area and the target audience for this edition were invited two creative persons, Joana Dias and Teresa Gameiro, who created product lines related to fashion and home products, in partnership with the Cooperativa de Artesanato de Santa Maria.
Weaving in Santa Maria has a great tradition, however, the product is devalued and it was intended, through this edition of the Residency, revive the tradition with new values of contemporary aesthetic, capturing new market niches.
Residência Criativa in 2012
The big bet of CRAA in the innovation of traditional knowledge was made by the 1st Creative Residency in 2012, in which it has enhanced the craftsmanship of the island of Pico through the unique handicraft school of the Region, the Regional Handicraft School of Santo Amaro. This residency has focused mainly on the techniques of wheat straw and fish scales, with the ultimate goal of revitalizing techniques in extinction, but also innovate the existing ones, taking advantage of the expertise of local artisans, creating new product lines economically viable. Went to contest and were selected the 5 best handicraft projects to be develop together with the artisans for 2 months on the island of Pico.
